The Climate Clever Initiative moves beyond simple tree planting to focus on sustainable ecosystem restoration and community education. By integrating environmental stewardship into its innovation and skills development programs, the initiative empowers local residents to become active custodians of their natural landscapes.
The Vision Behind the Seeds: Youth-Led Reforestation in Rumphi- Malawi (2025–2026)
As the global climate crisis intensifies, 2025 and 2026 season has become a critical pivot
point for local action by the youth in Rumphi. This movement isn’t just led by policy experts or international NGOs—it is being driven by the energy and hands of the youth. With the help of El Chay Foundation, coupled with the leadership of Youth Chair Hestings Kaponda, a massive reforestation initiative has successfully raised 10,000 trees, distributing them to strategic hubs to ensure a greener, more future that is resilient. The project was born from a simple realization: the youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the most effective stewards of today’s environment. Hestings Kapona has been instrumental in mobilizing young people, transforming environmental anxiety into tangible action. By focusing on tree planting, the initiative addresses soil erosion, carbon sequestration, and the restoration of local microclimates that have been destabilized by erratic weather patterns.
1. Rumphi Teachers Training College (TTC): By planting trees at a teacher-training facility, the project ensures that the ethos of conservation is passed down to the next generation of educators, who will influence thousands of students across the country. The college has benefitted 1000 trees.
2. Lusani Youth Group: has benefitted 850 trees and established own woodlot.
3. Kamphenda & Katowo: 1,200 trees
4. Vuvu & Zolokere: 3,300 trees among other centres.
The involvement of young people in Rumphi is a deliberate strategy. Youth-led mitigation is more sustainable because young participants view these trees as a lifelong investment. This season is more than a one-off event; it is a blueprint for regional climate action. The dedication of local youth stands as a living shield against climate change. The message is clear: when the youth are given the tools and the seeds—they can root a new legacy of hope in Malawian soil.
