El Chay Foundation is distributing free sanitary pads and delivering menstrual health education to over 300 adolescent girls in Mzuzu, ensuring menstruation is never a barrier to education.
El Chay Foundation has begun distributing free sanitary pads to adolescent girls in schools and communities across Mzuzu as part of its new menstrual health programme aimed at keeping girls in school.
In Malawi, an estimated one in ten girls misses school during her menstrual cycle due to lack of access to sanitary products. El Chay Foundation's programme directly addresses this barrier by providing free, quality sanitary pads alongside menstrual health education sessions.
The education sessions, delivered by trained health workers, cover topics including menstrual hygiene management, reproductive health, and the importance of girls' education. The programme has already reached over 300 girls in its first phase.
"No girl should miss school because of her period. This programme is about dignity, health, and education — all at once," said the Foundation's Health Programme Officer.
The Foundation is calling on community members, businesses, and well-wishers to support the programme so it can reach more girls across the Northern Region.
